2016 Pig Roast

2nd Annual - 2016

Special thanks for all your help to Dylan, Jasper, Veronica, Kevin, Jon, Tom, Dave, Emily, and Jenn.

The story for the 2nd Year goes like this:

In an effort to appease my gracious mother, who let the whole shebang go down in her back yard, I tore apart the whole pit and stacked the bricks away nicely. I knew I was going to build it again next year - it was always intended as an annual event. Year one went well, but there is always room for improvement:

  1. No Fires

  2. Prettier Pit

  3. Easier Pig Transport

  4. Better timing

So, we got started with our improvements, taking pictures along the way.

Starting pit 2, with the same construction method as pit 1, just more carefully.

Right about here, we started wishing we didn’t take it apart the year before…

The first course. Our recycled bricks still had a lot of mortar, which made packing them air-tight difficult.

Thinking ahead, we lined it with foil while constructing. Grinded some slots into the bricks to hold rebar to support the stretcher.

Removing a brick from each end after the second course, left a chute for shoveling coals into the corner.

Practice welds! I bought a welder and started to learn how to weld to make a stretcher to hold the pig. I chose MIG welding because I think it is the coolest. So much fun!

2nd year lessons

Overall, year two was even better than year one! There was no close calls with fires, the welded pig stretcher was easier to load in and out of the pit, and we were more organized on delivering the food. We also captured more pictures!
